About Fairmount Park Council for Historic Sites
The Fairmount Park Council for Historic Sites was incorporated in October, 1982 as a tax-exempt non-profit. The Council represents organizations that have custodial responsibility for the management of historic sites within the Fairmount Park system. The Council's mission is to promote, present and preserve unique and historic sites by:
- working with the City of Philadelphia and the Fairmount Park Commission;
- increasing public awareness and use through accessibility and attractiveness; and
- establishing interaction between sites to develop and implement mutual goals and long-term plans to facilitate site management, curatorial care, interpretation and community outreach.
Ultimately, the Council's goal is to broaden public knowledge and understanding of all the invaluable resources within the Fairmount Park system and their ability to convey historical significance in the development of our city, our nation and our social history.
Fairmount Park was entered into the National Register of Historic Places on January 25, 1972 as a historic district. This district is a geographic concentration of interrelated cultural resources, which include sites, buildings, structures and objects in the park along the East and West banks of the Schuylkill River known as East Park and West Park, and the extension of the park into the Wissahickon River Valley.
